Fiona Hernuss

Fiona Hernuss is a classically trained fine artist with an MFA degree from the prestigious New York Academy of Art in NY, NY, USA with a focus on figurative painting (1998) - studying under the following professors et al: Eric Fischl, Wade Schuman, Vincent Desiderio, Martha Meyer-Erlebacher. She received her BFA degree from Parsons School of Design, NY, USA (1995), majoring in communication design.

Fiona Hernuss' work is predominantly representational and deals with the complexity of the human condition. Her art is meant to touch, move and enrich - in terms of content as well as form and stands with sincerity and empathy.

Animals usually take on the leading roles in Fiona Hernuss' works. For Hernuss, they dampen, and quite deliberately so, the sharp-edged blows that human reality sometimes tends to deliver. With their help, Hernuss defuses, observes and comments in a visually appealing way. In this way, she gains the necessary distance from the topic depicted, which in turn allows for possible closeness to the subject.

In this way, Hernuss maintains a connection with the viewer, who might otherwise have turned away from many an unpleasant subject - always with the hope of broadening horizons for the viewer.

The art of Fiona Hernuss wants to be outwardly friendly, colorful and entertaining. On a closer look, one can also experience its underlying profundity and seriousness. Much like human beings themselves, all art has an outward - and an inward.
Hernuss' work appeals to a broad audience.

In what she calls her "painting beans" work, Hernuss comments on the fundamentals of social issues in a questioning, revealing and, above all, empathetic manner. In the accompanying texts written for these works, the artist herself enriches with comments and underlines her point of view authentically in her own words.

Fiona Hernuss has also dedicated herself to a very special theme: A painting theme that has long since become her fixed trademark - the emu - a ratite bird originally native to Australia, which she encountered years ago, and quite surprisingly at a very moving time in her life. Hernuss has been portraying this one bird ever since with dedication, care and a certain surrender. For Hernuss, when it wants to be painted, it's like a call from the wild that she can't - and wouldn't - resist: "The emu is like a colorful thread in my work - I orient and measure myself by it at the same time." With the emu, always as a fixed parallel work to all her other works, Hernuss says, she keeps track of her creations: "The emu grounds me, keeps me grounded and gives me artistic security. I grow with it and it grows with me."
