Alter Schwede!

"Old Swede!"- a good friend from Berlin always says this when something impresses him. I didn't know this saying at all from Austria, and although I find the exclamation really funny and very applicable, I never use it - for fear that it just wouldn't sound as real to me! It's weird how multi-layered, complex and sensitive language is, how strong and accurate or completely off the mark it can be. One day I was painting this gorgeous yellow guy of an emu on deep, rich blue and I remembered the "OLD SWEDE from Berlin" - and that was exactly when he was christened! That was one of my funniest name inventions - I can hardly imagine a more fitting word-colour game!
