Shark-fins in oil - Painting against „finning“

Fiona Hernuss is strongly committed to burning subjects, and this one is flaming! The gruesome butchering of sharks worldwide has to end before it is too late. An estimated 200 million sharks or more are brutally murdered annually simply for their highly sought fins, which are chopped off, one by one, from the live sharks. The still-living sharks, with no fins, are thrown back into the sea and left to drown in unimaginable agony and pain. This sadly very lucrative procedure has already caused a huge percentage of the shark populations to disappear. Some shark species are already wiped out forever. Since it takes so long for sharks to mature to reproductive age (some sharks mature at the age of 20 years and can live to become 70 years old), they can not recover without our immediate help. We must understand that this planet needs sharks to keep the oceans intact. We also need to learn that shark meat can be poisonous and not at all ‘cool’ to eat...

...Hernuss supports ‘SHARKPROJECT’ through her language: painting. Through her depiction of the butchered fins, delicately painted in multiple layers of oil, Hernuss wants to first shock and then fascinate the viewers, who at first can hardly believe their eyes. This is the moment of 100% awareness by the viewer. This is the time to tell the story of the imminent extermination of sharks unless we stop it together, simply by not consuming shark products. (Even by not buying the ‘cute’ single shark tooth necklace on the pleasant vacation island you went to last holiday.) Every little gesture counts....

...Here is something to think about: Most of the world’s oxygen comes from the sea. The sea needs the sharks to keep it clean. A reef without a shark will die off within one year. The sea can not be healthy without sharks. Sharks are essential to our survival on earth. This is hard to imagine with all the negative propaganda about sharks but, sadly, true. Get informed, learn more, please help. It is not about donating; it is about stopping consumption!
