This project was initiated to point out alternatives, specifically the local animal shelter, when acquiring a pet. In this case, the shelter is Vienna, Austria’s Wiener Tierschutzverein. The WTV was founded in 1846 by the famous poet and writer, Ignaz Castelli. Mission Merlin is here to support the WTV and bring a fresh, alternative breeze in the form of portrait paintings of animals that currently live in the shelter.
Hernuss stumbled across Merlin, the shelter dog, accidentally. She was searching the web and came across the WTV’s page. Hernuss was first struck by Merlin’s appearance and name and then, most of all, by his short story, which was just a few lines attached to his ‘who wants me?’ page. Merlin is 11 years old and has lived in the shelter for 8 years. He has been looking for a home and owner for 8 full years! Hernuss was deeply touched, because this meant that the WTV had not given up on Merlin. Throughout all these years, Merlin has been actively presented as a candidate for permanent ownership.

Hernuss saw this as a symbol of hope and had a strong wish to paint Merlin as the first in a series. She contacted the WTV with her unusual idea and immediately received extremely positive reactions from the management department as well as access to Merlin for studies in preparation for his painting.

Several different painting- and other art-related projects are currently in the intensive planning stages. The goal is to help the WTV raise funds for a desperately needed new home.
